WHITE-LINE PRINTS
These prints are made using a unique woodcut printmaking technique referred to often as “white-line method.” By carving only highlights and outlines, individual forms are separated in the design and can be hand inked with watercolor (or thinned inks) and a brush without spilling into each other. Small areas are painted or “inked” at a time, and hand-printed by applying pressure to the back of a sheet of paper that is fixed in position. This method was made well-known by a group of artists known as the “Provincetown Printers” in Provincetown, Massachusetts who were looking for a way to reproduce their watercolor paintings for sale. I use it to create unique iterations of each carved image, also known as “monoprints”.
